How to take the test

Start 32 scored rounds directly. Wait for the arrow, then press the matching side. Use the left / right buttons or arrow keys.

If you press before the arrow, that trial counts as incorrect and the next trial follows. If you do not respond before the time limit, the trial counts as a miss. Results stay on this device.

Scoring method

The main score is the median of your correct response times, measured withperformance.now(). Human Arena also shows accuracy, mean correct time, fastest and slowest valid responses, and the count of correct, incorrect, missed, and premature trials. Lower milliseconds are better.

Why results vary

Display refresh rate, input hardware, browser work, touch latency, attention, and fatigue can all shift a result. Treat the number as an entertainment and general-information measurement, not a medical, diagnostic, neurological, or IQ assessment.

What this game challenges

Choice Reaction Time Test measures decision speed: how quickly you notice a signal and choose the correct response among alternatives. It is a narrow timing and selection task, not a measure of thinking speed, intelligence, or overall ability.

Mouse, keyboard and touchscreen differences

A mouse or keyboard usually gives the fastest, most consistent response because the signal travels a short wired path. Touchscreens add a small delay from finger contact and can vary with screen protector or stylus. Treat cross-device comparisons as approximate.

Choice reaction time FAQ

What is a choice reaction time test?

Instead of one response, you choose the side that matches each arrow. It measures decision speed, not just simple reflex, because your brain has to pick the correct response.

How many rounds are there?

There are 32 scored rounds. Every round counts toward this result.

What counts as too soon or missed?

Pressing before the arrow appears is 'too soon' and that trial counts as incorrect and the next trial follows. Not responding before the time limit is a 'miss' and counts as an omission in the scored block.

Are results comparable across devices?

Only approximately. Screen refresh rate, input hardware, browser work, and touch latency can all shift the measured time.

Research behind this task · Choice reaction

Identify the stimulus, select the corresponding response, and consider speed together with errors.

Our game adaptation

Our two-arrow game uses balanced, randomly ordered choices. It does not estimate a Hick-law slope across different numbers of alternatives.

What we report

Correct-response median, accuracy, errors, omissions and early responses.
