How to take the test

Start 32 scored rounds directly. Compare both patterns, then press Same or Different. The three difficulty levels contain 10, 10 and 12 rounds.

If you do not answer before the time limit, the trial counts as a miss. Results stay on this device.

Scoring method

The main score is your overall accuracy and the median response time on correct trials, measured with performance.now(). Human Arena also reports accuracy and median time for each difficulty level, plus the total run duration. Higher accuracy and lower time are better.

Why results vary

Screen size, refresh rate, input hardware, browser work, attention, and fatigue can all shift a result. Treat the number as an entertainment and general-information measurement, not a medical, diagnostic, neurological, or IQ assessment.

What this game challenges

Processing Speed Test measures visual comparison speed: how quickly you can hold two patterns in mind and judge whether they match. It is a perceptual comparison task, not a measure of intelligence or overall ability.

How difficulty is controlled

Easier trials use few elements with obvious differences. Harder trials add more elements and subtler, more similar differences that take longer to detect. Every item has exactly one real difference, so no trial is ambiguous.

Processing speed FAQ

What does this test measure?

It measures how quickly and accurately you decide whether two visual patterns are the same or different. Harder levels add more elements and subtler differences.

How does difficulty change?

Level 1 uses a few obvious shapes. Level 2 adds more elements and color changes. Level 3 uses many elements with subtle, similar differences that take longer to spot.

What if I do not answer in time?

Each trial has a time limit. A missed trial counts as an omission in the scored block but does not end the run.

Are results comparable across devices?

Only approximately. Screen size, refresh rate, input hardware, and browser work can all shift measured time.

Research behind this task · Visual comparison

Simple comparison tasks can probe the speed of elementary processing.

Our game adaptation

Our shape-and-color comparisons use three visual loads. This is an original comparison game, not a reproduction of the paper's processing-speed battery.

What we report

Correct-response median and accuracy overall and at each visual load.
